In February, we are talking about metal alloys. Today we’ll talk about pewter.
Pewter is a malleable metal alloy consisting of tin (85–99%), antimony (approximately 5–10%), copper (2%), bismuth, and sometimes silver. It has been known since the Bronze Age and has been used all this time to make dishes, ornaments and dubious works of casting art. This metal is susceptible to the disease “tin plague”, when mixing grey and white tin leads to the disintegration of the metal. Due to “tin plague” Scott’s expedition to the South Pole perished when their barrels of fuel leaked.
