In June, we explore unknown facts about the artists of the Northern Renaissance. Today we will tell you about Hieronymus Bosch.

 

He took his pseudonym from his hometown. But that’s not the most interesting fact about his biography. His surrealist canvases, overflowing with symbols, often feature an owl. Bosch loved them so much that he painted at least 20 of them in his paintings. And now for the fun fact: no one really understands what the owl in his paintings symbolizes. And if later another visionary says that owls are not what they seem, we will counter that sometimes an owl is just an owl.
