Edward S. Curtis

In November we talk about the most famous photographers of the 19th century. Today is Edward S. Curtis.

Edward Sheriff Curtis took several thousand photographs of North American Indians. Although he began his work in the late 19th century (hence his inclusion in this column), most of his photographs date from the early 20th century. Critics of his work claim that Curtis retouched the images and staged them; nevertheless, there is no other such witness to Native American life in history.
