  1. Weegee

Arthur Fellig, also known as Weegee, was an American photojournalist and master of documentary photography, renowned for his photo essays of New York City nightlife during the Great Depression and Prohibition. In 1938, Weegee became the first civilian to obtain a police-grade shortwave radio permit. This allowed him to often arrive at the scene of an incident before emergency services.

5. Edward S. Curtis

Edward Sheriff Curtis took several thousand photographs of North American Indians. Although he began his work in the late 19th century, most of his photographs date from the early 20th century. Critics of his work claim that Curtis retouched the images and staged them; nevertheless, there is no other such witness to Native American life in history.
