Edward Steichen was born in 19th-century Europe but worked his entire life in the United States. He began as an expressionist painter but discovered photography and is considered one of the fathers of glamour and fashion photography. He became famous for his portraits of Hollywood stars, but for a long time, his landscape photograph “The Pond—Moonlight” was considered the most expensive in the world, selling for $2.9 million.
