Penitentes

In December we talk about snow classifications. Today – Penitentes.

Penitentes, or nieves penitentes (Spanish for “penitential snows”), are snow formations found at high altitudes. They are elongated, thin sheets of hardened snow or ice, located close to each other and facing the sun. The name comes from the resemblance of a field of penitentes to a crowd of people kneeling and performing penitence.
