Naruto whirlpools

1 Min Read

In April we talk about local currents. Today – Naruto whirlpools.

Naruto whirlpools are tidal whirlpools in the Naruto Strait between Naruto City and Awaji Island. The strait between Naruto City and Awaji Island is 1.3 kilometers wide. The current increases and then decreases the water level twice a day. During the spring floods, the water speed can reach 20 kilometers per hour, creating whirlpools up to 20 meters in diameter. Naruto whirlpools have inspired Japanese artists to create woodblock prints and have given their name to surimi, as well as to the manga and anime of the same name.
