The Antarctic Circumpolar Current is the most powerful ocean current in the world and the only one that passes through all meridians. Although the current has been studied relatively recently, it was well known to sailors as the Roaring Forties. The area between 40° and 50° latitude in the Southern Hemisphere is characterized by strong and persistent westerly winds, causing frequent storms, due to the absence of continents.
