A shaved forehead was considered the standard of beauty for women in aristocratic circles in Italy, France, and the Netherlands in the 15th century. It is believed that Isabella of Bavaria introduced this fashion. Thanks to her, aristocratic women shaved their foreheads and plucked their eyebrows, and to make their necks appear longer, they shaved the back of their heads. Beauty standards always have their detractors, as Geoffroy de La Tour Landry wrote in his book of advice to daughters: “Dear daughters, do not pluck your eyebrows, your temples, or the hair on your forehead, so that they appear higher than nature intended.”
