Orfield Laboratories is a research facility in Minneapolis. Inside the building lies an anechoic chamber—one of the quietest places on Earth—which absorbs 99.9% of sound.
A double-walled, hexagonal steel box is suspended on springs within a pentagonal chamber. These two rooms are housed inside an acoustic laboratory featuring concrete walls 30 cm thick. The door to the anechoic chamber is constructed from steel panels covered with fiberglass acoustic wedges, which also line the chamber’s interior surfaces.
While inside the room, people can hear the sound of their own blood flowing in their ears. Many experience discomfort.
