Ibe

In March we talk about local winds. Today – Ibe.

The Ibe is a Dzungarian wind that blows during the cold season through the Dzungarian Gate (pictured) from Lake Ebi-Nur in China toward Lake Alakol in Kazakhstan. The wind is hurricane-force, gusty, and warm. Its maximum speed in winter and spring reaches 60–80 m/s, during which time the wind carries a lot of dust, sand, and sometimes even small stones. According to the oral traditions of the natives, it carries away even camels and anything else that can be carried away.
