In March we talk about local winds. Today – Foehn.
Foehn is a strong, gusty, warm, and dry wind blowing from the mountains into the valley. It is widespread in all mountainous regions. Originally, it referred to the southerly wind that blows during the winter months and brings thaws to the northern side of the Alps, hence the German name. Later, it came to be used to describe any warm winds coming down from the mountains: the Caucasus, the Alps, the Carpathians, the Himalayas, the Pamirs, and many others. Interestingly, in Russian, “foehn” is the word for “hair dryer”.
