In April we talk about local currents. Today – Maelstrom.
Moskström, or Maelstrom, is a system of tidal currents and whirlpools, one of the most powerful in the world, which forms off the Lofoten archipelago between the Norwegian Sea and the Vestfjords.
Moskström was described in the 13th century in the Old Norse poem Edda. Edgar Allan Poe, Jules Verne, and Melville wrote about it. The Swedish bishop Olaf Magnus attributed the whirlpool to divine powers and mentioned it as much stronger than the previously known Sicilian whirlpool Charybdis. However, it is unknown whether Olaf personally swam in both whirlpools or was speaking from hearsay.
