In May we talk about forests. Today – Puzzlewood.
Puzzlewood is a wooded park in Gloucestershire. Iron ore was mined here during Roman times. The ancient quarries left behind unique folds of land known as scaulis, found nowhere else in the world and overgrown with forest and moss.
In the 19th century, the owner created deliberately tangled paths through the forest, totaling approximately 1.6 km. In the 20th century, J.R.R. Tolkien and J.K. Rowling frequently walked here, and Puzzlewood is believed to have inspired them to create their fantasy forests.
