Haleakalā is a national park located on the island of Maui, Hawaii. The crater walls shield the area from the wind, while the absence of animal and plant life creates absolute silence. In the language of the indigenous people, Haleakalā means “House of the Sun”; according to local legend, the demigod Maui imprisoned the Sun here to lengthen the day.
